The Ellington Kid (2012) Shot Analysis

Wide shot. Colours brighter and warmer toned for the present and day time, to distinguish between the story he’s telling in the past and the present. Clothing is also brighter. Could be a reflection of the tone and the mood of this scene – more light-hearted? Shot is balanced on either side or parallel – like a reflection. Everything is in focus, adding to the effect of everything being the same/mirrored.

Wide shot. Very dark and dimly lit shot. Slow motion again. Create sinister shadows and silhouettes which give a tense atmosphere to the shot. Deep focus means both the foreground and background are in focus.

Medium close up tracking shot. Cold grey colours, harsh, cold but dim lighting that creates shadows. Lights leads into his face making him the focal point of the shot. He is centred so again the focal point of the shot. Colours create a dark, bleak atmosphere which again could reflect the mood. In contrast, the colours are greyer than the present time again to help distinguish a difference between past and present. The guy who got stabbed is in focus while the background isn’t, making him even more the focal point of the shot. Slow motion gives dramatic feel to shot, and again acts as a distinguisher between the story and the present.

Medium close up shot. Hand held, slow-motion, shaky. High angle makes the guy stabbed seem weaker and more helpless. Colours make him look paler and weaker

Slow-motion. Pan. Low angle shot makes the people in the gang seem more intimidating and scary. Knife pointed at the camera makes it seem as if the knife is pointed at the audience, involving them more. However, knife isn’t in focus, the nearest gang members face/eyes are. Aggressive facial expressions, but only shown through the eyes as rest of face is hidden by bandana

Close up shot. Slow-motion. Big knife in focus and a close up shot of gives the object significance, and also tension since the object is a large knife (a weapon)
